2023 was the year of AI.
Although AI has been in use for over a decade, services that use AI didn’t brag about its use. As AI became available to the public, AI became the newest buzzword, with AI-assisted tools and services exploding. In a matter of days, it appeared as though every online service and application incorporated AI features. The skeptic in me wondered how many companies could quickly add that feature.
Because I wanted to sort through all the claims of superiority to decide whether, how, and where AI would fit into my work and my clients’ marketing, I refrained from blogging about AI.
So, now that the dust has settled from the AI explosion, I’ll share my insights. My first concern was how AI would affect creativity. Here is my creativity conversation with ChatGPT:
“My prompt: I am a creative writer. Tell me how using Chat GPT can help me become a better writer.
Chat answer: Certainly, as a creative writer, you can benefit from using ChatGPT in several ways to enhance your writing skills:
Inspiration and Brainstorming: ChatGPT can help you brainstorm ideas, characters, plots, and settings for your stories. You can have a conversation with it, and it can provide you with fresh perspectives and creative suggestions.
Writer’s Block: If you are stuck with writer’s block, you can converse with ChatGPT to get past it. It can provide prompts, starting sentences, or engage in a dialogue to get your creative juices flowing.
Editing and Proofreading: After you’ve written a draft, you can use ChatGPT to assist with editing and proofreading. It can help you identify grammar and spelling errors and provide suggestions for improving sentence structure and clarity.
Character Development: You can use ChatGPT to explore your characters more deeply. Describe a character, and it can offer ideas for their backstory, personality traits, and motivations.
World Building: If you’re working on a fictional world for your story, you can discuss it with ChatGPT. It can assist you in developing the rules, history, and unique aspects of your world.
Research: When you need to gather information or conduct research for your writing, ChatGPT can provide quick answers and insights on various topics.
Dialogue Practice: Writing realistic dialogue can be challenging. You can practice crafting dialogue by conversing with ChatGPT and refining your character’s voices.
Genre Exploration: ChatGPT can help you explore different genres and writing styles. You can ask it to provide examples or explanations of various literary techniques.
Feedback and Critique: While ChatGPT’s feedback isn’t a substitute for human critique, it can offer initial impressions and suggestions for improvement.
Remember that while ChatGPT can be a valuable tool, it’s essential to maintain your unique voice and creativity as a writer. Use it to supplement your creative process and adapt it to your specific needs and preferences.”
If you’re inclined to attribute human qualities to AI, you might suspect the Chat response is a sales pitch. However, the skeptics I follow concur with Chat’s use recommendations. Even as major news publishers are losing readership because of AI dominance in search, they are accepting the inevitability of a mutualistic symbiotic relationship.
To the dismay of some, AI will not give you an intelligent gene. AI can make you more of what you already are. Poor content will be turned into even more sub-par content. I can only hope the public recognizes garbage content.
