You’ve likely seen this graphic before. It’s a meme that has inspired dozens of stories, from website design to an article about NHL power rankings. The original illustrator was lost in an exact match Google search that went on for pages. There is even a petition on Reddit to change the image.
Overuse can turn a meme into mush, so why am I contributing? First, I was impressed with how a colleague turned this meme into an impressive thirty-second commercial for a business networking breakfast. My colleague’s commercial also allowed me to write this post about the power of analogy and humor in storytelling.

First, I’ll share my colleague’s commercial. You might like to use it someday.

Now, back to the power of analogy and humor in storytelling.
Storytelling is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, a means to entertain, educate, and connect. But what separates a good story from a great one? The answer often lies in the storyteller’s mastery of techniques like analogy and humor.
Analogies are powerful because they allow us to understand complex ideas by relating them to familiar concepts. Imagine trying to explain the vastness of the universe without the analogy of a grain of sand on a beach. Humor, however, can captivate audiences and make even the most serious topics more accessible. A well-placed joke can break the tension, forge a connection, and leave a lasting impression.
Many other writing techniques can elevate a narrative, engage readers, and transform a good story into an unforgettable one. My blog post about repurposing existing content explores eight formulas for writing techniques. Additionally, download my ebook, 54 Power Writing Formulas.
